World Heart Day is taking place on Sunday September 29, so what better time to make sure you're looking after your own ticker?

Cardiovascular disease is a big killer and is becoming an even more pressing issue. It has been predicted that over 23 million people will die in the year 2030 from cardiovascular disease.

So, what can you do to prevent yourself from developing heart disease? First of all it's a good idea to talk to your doctor and see if you are particularly at risk, for instance with high blood pressure or high blood sugar (or diabetes).

Smoking is a major risk factor, so if you're a smoker, take steps to quit as soon as possible. As well as this, engage in regular physical exercise. Find something you enjoy so that you can stick to it!

The Heart Research Institute says that around 150 minutes of moderate intensity exercise per week is a good benchmark for health.

In addition, a nutritious diet is extremely important. Eat plenty of fruits and vegetables, whole grains and keep an eye on your iron intake and other levels of vitamins and minerals.

While drinking plenty of water is ideal, keep consumption of alcohol low as it can damage the heart muscle. Make sure you pass this information on and let your loved ones know how to look after their hearts too.
